Auckland City Libraries are funded from rates. This entitles residents and ratepayers of Auckland City to free membership.
Other people may join upon payment of a subscription. This includes residents of North Shore, Waitakere, Manukau and Rodney. If you live outside of Auckland City, you may be eligible for free membership with your local library.
There are five subscription membership options for those who reside outside of the Auckland City area.
Full subscription membership
- $120 for 12 months
- full subscription membership offers the same privileges as that of Auckland City residents and ratepayers
- full subscription membership is available to all customers who reside outside of the Auckland City area, regardless of age.
Full subscription members are bound by all other general terms and conditions of membership.

Associate subscription membership
- $20 for up to 12 months
- the associate subscription is available to the spouse or partner and/or dependent children of a full paying subscription member, provided that they reside at the same address
- the expiry date of this membership will be that of the full paying subscription membership
- it is a requirement of associate subscription membership, that the enrollee visits an Auckland City Library with the full subscription member, for the first visit to have the membership validated
- associate subscription membership is available to all customers who reside outside of the Auckland City area, regardless of age.
Associate subscription members are bound by all other general terms and conditions of membership.

Pay as you go membership
- annual fee of $30
- lending fee of $2 per standard book or magazine borrowed
- normal rental charges apply for other items
- allows borrowing and access to all research services and free access databases
- does not allow access to card-access databases.
You can view a list of free and card-access databases before deciding to proceed with the membership.
- all items must be issued by library staff and rental charges paid at the time of issue. Pay as you go members are unable to borrow using Auckland City Libraries self-checkout units

Remote membership
- $90 for 12 months
- no borrowing
- allows access to card-access databases, research services and internal databases.
You can view a list of free and card-access databases before deciding to proceed with the membership.
- remote membership is for personal use only. Any company based outside of Auckland City wishing to use our resources should use our Ask a librarian service
- remote membership is available to any individual who does not wish to borrow library material
- remote members are not required to provide identification to obtain this membership and do not have to visit an Auckland City Library to validate the membership. You can pay on-line by credit card. On receipt of the completed enrolment form we will email you a link to our secure site for payment. Cheques by arrangement
- remote membership is available to all individuals who reside outside of the Auckland City area, regardless of age. If you are under the age of 18 years, check with your parent or guardian first.
- Please use our Ask a Librarian form if you are interested in becoming a remote member.
Remote members are bound by all other general terms and conditions of membership.
