Am I entitled to free membership?

If you live or pay rates in Auckland City, you are entitled to free membership at our libraries.

Auckland City does not include the other parts of Greater Auckland - if you live in North Shore City, Waitakere City, Manukau City, or Rodney district, we offer a range of paid membership options.

Non-resident students at Auckland City schools are entitled to free membership.

How do I become a member?

You will need to fill out a membership form - either online, or at any of our libraries.

You will then need to bring in identification to activate your account.

What do I need to bring in?

There are two things you will need to bring in when you come into the library to activate your membership:
  • Photo ID - such as your passport, your driver's license or an 18+ card
  • Proof of address - any mail posted to your residential address (not your P.O. Box) in Auckland City from the last four weeks, or a printout from your bank stamped and dated with today's date.

Overseas visitor?

To join the library you will need to show us your visa - either in your passport, or online through Immigration New Zealand's website. If there are less than six months remaining on your visa when you join the library, you will have to pay a bond of $70. At the end of your membership period, $40 of this bond is refunded.

Under 18?

  • If you are under 18, you will also need your guardian with you when you enrol. Your guardian will need to provide identification and proof or address.
  • Non resident students attending Auckland City schools will need to bring proof of school attendance, such as a student ID card.

Live outside Auckland City?

  • Subscription membership offers you the same privileges as that of Auckland City residents and ratepayers. The annual fee is $120.
  • Pay As You Go membership offers you borrowing privileges at a cost of $2 per book or magazine; normal rental fees apply to CDs and DVDs. The annual fee is $30.
  • Remote membership gives you full access to our online databases, but no borrowing privileges. The annual fee is $90.
You can join at any of our branches - you will need to bring in photo ID and proof of your current residential address.

Visitors to the Central City Library are welcome to come in and browse our shelves. If you want to access the internet in the library there are short term internet accounts available, and you are able to use any of our unrestricted databases. Talk to the reference staff if you wish to have a look at any items from the basement.
